Developer Update: Trade Routes and the Next Evolution of Upland

Big changes are on the horizon for Upland.

In this developer update, we’re sharing a preview of several systems currently in development that will expand how players build, connect, and grow the economy across the map. From Office Structures launching today to the upcoming Trade Route systemplanned for later in 2026, these features introduce new ways for neighborhoods to work together and for commerce to move between cities.

At its core, Upland has always been about property ownership and development. The systems outlined here build on that foundation by adding new layers of commercial infrastructure, transportation, and collaboration between neighborhoods.

Players can begin placing Office Structures today to establish a commercial presence and help shape the future trade network. While Commerce Scores and Trade Routes will arrive later in 2026, the groundwork for those systems begins with the offices players place across neighborhoods now.

Alongside these upcoming gameplay systems, we’re also introducing an adjustment to Sparklet packages in the in-app store designed to support the long-term sustainability of the Sparklet economy.

Together, these updates offer an early look at how Upland is evolving into a more connected world driven by player-owned property, infrastructure, and commerce.

Office Structures

Office Structures are the first piece of the puzzle, and they are available in the Upland Store beginning today.

Unlike many previous assets, these are permanent additions to the store. Players can purchase Office Structures at any time, giving neighborhoods an ongoing way to build commercial infrastructure. Four office types are available across two tiers, offering flexible entry points depending on strategy and budget.

Small Office — 30,000 UPX
A small commercial building that provides a solid number of Office Units for those just getting started in the commercial space. It’s a flexible option for players looking to establish trade presence across multiple neighborhoods.

Large Office — 50,000 UPX
A larger commercial structure that provides increased Office Units, strengthening the commercial capacity of the neighborhood where it’s placed. Ideal for players looking to make a stronger investment in a neighborhood’s growing trade network.

Office Complex — $10
A wide commercial campus that introduces Office Units to a neighborhood while offering an accessible entry point into the office system. It’s a great starting option for players looking to begin building commercial connections.

Office Tower — $15
A vertical commercial tower that delivers a strong concentration of Office Units in a compact footprint. Its smaller ground space also leaves more room for additional structures and decorative props on the property.

Each Office Structure contains Office Units, which represent the amount of commerce operating within that neighborhood and city. The more Office Unitsa neighborhood has, the stronger its commercial presence becomes.

A neighborhood’s Commerce Score represents its overall economic strength, combining its commercial capacity (Office Units) and its connections to other neighborhoods (Bonds).

In the future, Uppies will be able to work in these offices, allowing players to level them up and increase their impact. As offices grow and develop, they will strengthen the commercial ties between neighborhoods and contribute even more to the broader trade network.

Building Bonds Between Neighborhoods

Office Structures generate Office Units, which contribute to a neighborhood’s Commerce Score and help attract future activity.

A bond is created when two players establish reciprocal commercial presence between neighborhoods. For example:

  • You have your home address in Neighborhood A
  • You build an Office Structure in Neighborhood B
  • A player whose home address is in Neighborhood B builds an Office Structure in Neighborhood A

When this happens, a mutual bond is formed between the two neighborhoods.

These bonds represent how closely neighborhoods are connected through trade and shared infrastructure. They are a core component of a neighborhood’s Commerce Score, which reflects its overall economic strength and connectivity.

As Commerce Scores increase, neighborhoods become more attractive destinations for Uppies, who will seek out areas with stronger commercial activity and employment opportunities.

It’s important to note that placing offices in your own neighborhood does not create bonds. Bonds are formed through connections between different neighborhoods, not from individual office placements alone.

Players can still build Office Structures in their own neighborhoods, but these placements do not contribute to bonds unless they are part of a reciprocal relationship with another neighborhood. In some cases, players may choose to develop offices locally to sell or transfer to other players, helping enable those cross-neighborhood connections.

As more players establish reciprocal placements, neighborhoods develop stronger connections and higher Commerce Scores.

What Strengthens a Neighborhood’s Commerce Score

Several factors influence a neighborhood’s Commerce Score, particularly through its bond network:

  1. Unique Mutual Bonds — Each unique pair of players creating reciprocal office placements strengthens the connection between neighborhoods. The more unique participants involved, the stronger the bond network becomes.
  2. Balanced Bonds — Bonds are strongest when both neighborhoods contribute evenly. For example, a 5 → 5 relationship between two neighborhoods is stronger than an uneven connection like 5 → 1.
  3. Network Diversity — Neighborhoods that build connections with many different neighborhoods will develop stronger trade potential than those relying on only a small number of partners.
  4. Distance — Distance between connected neighborhoods will play an increasing role as Trade Routes are introduced. Longer connections between cities will offer greater opportunities, rewarding players who establish networks that span across the map.

Commerce, Uppies, and Growing Neighborhoods

As neighborhoods build stronger Commerce Scores, they develop higher levels of commercial activity and become more connected within the broader economy.

The ultimate benefit of this system is growth. In the future, a neighborhood’s Commerce Score will be one of several factors contributing to its Resident Score, helping determine where Uppies choose to live. Neighborhoods with higher Commerce Scores will be better positioned to attract residents over time.

Neighborhoods with stronger commerce will become more attractive destinations, drawing in more residents seeking access to jobs, activity, and opportunity. As more Uppies move into a neighborhood, it creates a cycle of growth that increases its importance within the Upland economy.

Players benefit most from building offices across different neighborhoods, as these connections strengthen the overall commercial network and contribute to higher Commerce Scores.

In the future, Uppies will naturally gravitate toward neighborhoods with higher commerce, seeking employment in Office Structures. Neighborhoods that successfully build strong trade connections and high Commerce Scores will attract more residents, more activity, and more reasons for players to continue building.

As more players place offices and build reciprocal connections, neighborhoods develop stronger Commerce Scores, increasing their ability to support trade and attract activity. These connections shape how effectively goods move between neighborhoods and help establish them as destinations, not just for trade, but as places where Uppies choose to live, work, and participate in the economy.

Trade Routes

Trade Routes are coming to Upland later in 2026, introducing a new way for players to discover Troves and move resources across the map.

Much like Fishing allows players to discover Troves while exploring waterways, Trade Routes will allow players to discover Troves by transporting cargo between neighborhoods and cities. Instead of casting a line into the water, players will send vehicles across the road network, searching for opportunities along established trade paths.

Fishing explores Upland’s waterways. Trade Routes explore its roads.

This system also brings meaningful utility to cargo vehicles, especially Semi Trucks, which are designed to move the largest amounts of cargo across the Upland map.

At its core, Trade Routes connect neighborhoods through commercial infrastructure, allowing goods, and opportunity, to flow between them.

Trailers

Trailers are a brand-new asset class coming to Upland, and they play a critical role in the Trade Route system.

Unlike traditional vehicle attachments, Trailers are standalone map assets. They do not physically connect to Semi Trucks or other vehicles. Instead, players place Trailers at Distribution Centers where goods are picked up for transport.

Distribution Centers will serve as commercial hubs where goods are loaded and transported between neighborhoods. More details on distribution centers will come in future announcements.

All players who own a Semi Truck will receive a Trailer when they become available later in 2026, giving them immediate access to Trade Routes.

2026 Semi Trucks

New Semi Trucks are coming to Upland, featuring all-new 2026 designs and models. These are purpose-built for the Trade Route economy and carry the largest cargo capacity of any vehicle in the game.

More details on pricing and quantities will be shared ahead of the sale. Stay tuned.

Sparklet Store Update

Starting this week, we are making an adjustment to Sparklet packages in the app. The number of packages available will be reduced, and each package will contain 35% less Sparklet.

This change is designed to better balance how Sparklet enters the ecosystem. As demand for Sparklet has grown, a significant portion of supply has been coming directly through the in-app store. While convenient, this can reduce the role of the open market in determining price and supply.

By reducing the amount of Sparklet available through the app store and shifting larger purchases to the web, we are encouraging more activity through the exchange and bridge, where Sparklet’s value is determined by real player demand.

This helps create a healthier and more sustainable economy by allowing the broader trading ecosystem to play a larger role in price discovery and distribution, while reducing excess supply entering from a single source.

For players, the best value for Sparklet will continue to come from purchasing on an exchange and bridging it into the game. The in-app store will remain available for convenience, while these changes are designed to encourage greater participation in the exchange and support a more active, player-driven market.

We are also updating where certain Sparklet packages are available. Moving forward, $50, $100, and $300 Sparklet bundles will be available exclusively through the web version of Upland, while $5, $10, and $25 bundles will remainavailable in the mobile app.

Here’s a helpful guide we put together on how to bridge in Sparklet. Check it out.

The Next Evolution of Upland

This update marks an important step in the continued evolution of Upland.

From Office Structures that establish commercial presence, to Commerce Scores that connect neighborhoods, to Trailers and Semi Trucks that move goods across cities, the pieces of a larger economic system are beginning to take shape. At the center of it all are Trade Routes, a new layer of gameplay that connects property ownership, infrastructure, and transportation into a living network of commerce.

For the first time, neighborhoods will not just grow through development alone, but through the strength of their connections to other neighborhoods across the map. Offices create bonds. Bonds generate commerce. Commerce attracts activity. And those connections ultimately power the trade routes that move goods, and opportunity, through Upland.

This is Upland maturinginto a deeper, more interconnected world. Property ownership remains the foundation, but the value of that property will increasingly be shaped by how neighborhoods collaborate, build, and participate in the broader economy.

Today’s update is a look at what we’re building and where the platform is heading. More details on Office mechanics, Trailers, Semi Trucks, Distribution Centers, and Trade Routes will be shared as development continues.

Trade Routes are planned for later in 2026, and this is just the beginning of what’s to come. The future of Upland is being built one office, one bond, and one trade route at a time.
